On Sunday, six British tourists stripped off and leapt into the Fountain of the Naids in Piazza della Repubblica, The Local news reported citing Italian daily, Il Messaggero.

Despite the time of day, their antics attracted a small group of onlookers, who reported the incident to the police.

Police charged the six tourists, who ranged in age from 25 to 49, with indecent exposure and for jumping into the monument.

According to Italian laws, anyone caught frolicking in Rome`s fountains or throwing rubbish into them, faces a fine of up to 200 euros ($223).

The fine amount was increased this summer following a spate of incidents in which tourists used fountains to cool off amid an intense heatwave, with one even being seen by President Sergio Mattarella, who happened to be passing by.

Frustrated residents have also taken to social media to shame tourists they spot indulging in a fountain dip.
