Today, the 40-year-old former university lecturer has become a symbol of Iraqi resistance against the ISIS. The one-time Taekwondo champion is a member of Shia militia group, the Imam Ali Brigade, which is fighting against the IS.


According to a report, Azrael has more than 50,000 followers in a Facebook page dedicated to him that shows him holding axe, waving swords and even abusing the corpses of ISIS fighters.


Azrael has joined the Iraqi forces and Iranian-backed militias against the Islamic State. However some sources speculated that he may be the creation of Iranian propaganda.


Meanwhile back home in Mumbai, over a hundred Muslim leaders gathered at the Makhdoom Shah Baba shrine at Mahim to pledge their fight against the Islamic State. The last week's development has come after it was widely reported that over 150 Indians are under the radar of intelligence agencies for their ‘support’ to Islamic State group.
