Indira, who left the BJP recently, today joined the Congress along with her 7,000 supporters at the Congress Bhavan here.

State Congress president TN Haokip formally appointed her as the spokesperson of the party and hoped that her appointment would strengthen the Congress.

Welcoming Indira to the party fold, Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh too expressed confidence that her joining would bolster the Congress.

Meanwhile, Indira stated that the "manner in which the party tickets were distributed" was the reason behind her leaving BJP.

"The Congress' principle of accepting individuals to the party irrespective of caste and religion" is another factor why I joined the Congress, Indira said.

She also expressed confidence that Congress would retain power and form government in the state.

Indira hails from Thoubal Assembly constituency, the home turf of Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh.

Manipur goes to poll on March 4 and March 8.
