Aarushi murder case: Meghna Gulzar, director of Talvar, backs Allahabad HC verdict
Meghna Gulzar tells Zee News she felt there was not enough evidence against Nupur and Rajesh Talwar to keep them in prison on charges of murdering daughter Aarushi and servant Hemraj.
New Delhi: Meghna Gulzar, director of the movie Talvar - based on the Aarushi murder case, has deemed Thursday's verdict acquitting Nupur and Rajesh Talwar as the correct decision.
Allahabad High Court acquitted Nupur and Rajesh Talwar in the murder of their teenage daughter Aarushi and their domestic help Hemraj in 2008. The court said they could not be held guilty on the basis of the evidence on record. Meghna, who previously said her production team had to go through a lot clutter to make sense of the case for the movie, told Zee News that she felt Thursday's verdict was correct. "I do not know if this is the final verdict in the case or not, but it is definitely the correct verdict," she said.
Daughter of acclaimed cinema veterans Gulzar and Rakhee, Meghna said that she felt evidence against the Talwars were lacking. "No one can be kept in jail on murder charges without adequate evidence against them," she said.
The 2015 movie was a retelling of three investigation theories and Meghna says her team tried to keep the script objective and leave the emotions and any conclusions drawn to the audience.
In reality though, the double murder case has been one of the most controversial crime event in the country. After a long-drawn legal process, hardly helped by shoddy initial investigations by Uttar Pradesh, the Talwars were held guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment by a Ghaziabad CBI court in 2013.
Their nine-year ordeal came to an end on Thursday and Rajesh and Nupur will make their way out of jail a day later.
