New Delhi: Father's Day is celebrated every year on the third Sunday in June. The date for this year's commemoration is June 19. Father's Day is observed to honour our fathers' contributions to our lives and to recognise the sacrifices they make in order to provide us with a happy and healthy life.
Sonora Smart Dodd, whose father was a Civil War soldier, was the first to propose the notion of Father's Day. She observed the day to honour her father's attempt to raise six children, including Sonora, as a single father after their mother died during childbirth.
Because Sonora's father was born in the month of June, the first Father's Day was observed on June 19, 1910. However, President Lyndon B. Johnson of the United States declared the day in 1966, and President Richard Nixon of the United States declared the third Sunday in June as Father's Day in 1972.
