Changpeng Zhao, often called "CZ," was sentenced to four months in prison for violating U.S. anti-money laundering and sanctions laws. Despite stepping down as Binance's CEO he still holds a 90 per cent stake in the company, making him the richest individual currently in prison.

Zhao’s fall marks a major turning point for the cryptocurrency industry. Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange was at the heart of his empire. Zhao’s imprisonment follows that of another crypto leader, Sam Bankman-Fried of FTX who is currently serving a 25-year sentence.

Even during his time in prison, Zhao’s net worth is expected to increase due to the ongoing cryptocurrency bull market. This makes him an anomaly—an individual whose financial empire thrives despite his legal troubles.

Zhao's sentence, delivered by U.S. District Judge Richard Jones was notably lighter than the 3+ years initially sought by prosecutors and the 18-month maximum outlined in federal guidelines. In contrast, Bankman-Fried received a far harsher 25-year sentence although he is appealing the decision.

Although Zhao no longer holds the CEO title, his influence remains strong with close associates continuing to serve on Binance’s board. His presence in the company, even from behind bars ensures that his financial influence continues.
