Nobel Prize 2016: Here are the winners

New York: Awarded for 'the Greatest Benefit to Mankind,' the Nobel Prize is an international award administered by the Nobel Foundation in Stockholm, Sweden, and based on the fortune of Alfred Nobel, Swedish inventor and entrepreneur.

The 2016 Nobel Prize season kicked off with the announcement of the medicine prize on October 3, saw nominations of 376 candidates - the largest ever number of nominees, the previous record being 278 in 2014.

Other notable nominees from the Nobel Prize list included the 'White Helmets' of the Syrian Conflict, who received several editorial endorsements from western newspapers; representative 'Greek islanders', particularly those from Lesbos, for their response to the related refugee crisis; Nadia Murad for her work in refugee advocacy; and Congolese gynaecologist Denis Mukwege for work with victims of rape.

Six other Columbians, five of them the victim of Columbian armed conflict, were also nominated.
