Kargil Vijay Diwas was celebrated in Jammu and Kashmir's Dras at the Kargil War Memorial on July 25 to commemorate the heroes of the 'Operation Vijay'. On July 26, 1999, India successfully regained command over all the high outposts in Jammu and Kashmir's Kargil in 1999. India's war against Pakistan was called 'Operation Vijay', it was fought for more than 60 days.

On the morning of July 25, a special event narrating the stories of Operation VIJAY was organized by the Army at Lamochen near Dras. The epic battles on Tololing, Tiger Hill, Pt 4875 and other prominent features were narrated.
A number of military personnel including the gallantry award winners and families of Kargil War heroes attended the event.
The narration took everyone down the memory lane showcasing the daring feat achieved by the valiant soldiers of Indian Army.
At the memorial, 559 lamps were lit as a reminder of lives sacrificed by 559 bravehearts for the nation.
