The winter season brings with it the problem of dry skin. Dr Niti Gaur, MD, Fellowship in Cosmetic Dermatology (Singapore, USA), Board Certified Dermatologist Founder of Citrine Clinic, Gurgaon, shares four reasons which commonly lead to dry skin.

Over-Cleansing
Over-Cleansing

Over-cleansing your skin can disrupt its natural moisture barrier and strip away essential oils, leading to dryness. It's essential to find the right balance when cleansing. Avoid using harsh, soap-based cleansers and opt for gentle, pH-balanced cleansers instead. Wash your face with lukewarm water, and limit cleansing to twice a day, unless otherwise recommended by your dermatologist.

Taking Hot Showers

While hot showers and baths may feel soothing, they can actually strip away the natural oils and moisture from your skin, leading to dryness and irritation. Instead, opt for lukewarm water and limit your bathing time to around 5-10 minutes. Pat your skin gently with a towel after bathing, leaving some moisture on the skin, and immediately apply a moisturizer to lock in hydration.

Not Using Moisturizer Or Using Wrong One

Skipping moisturizer is a common mistake that can leave your skin dry and dehydrated. Moisturizers help to replenish and retain the moisture in your skin, preventing dryness and maintaining a healthy skin barrier. Choose a moisturizer that suits your skin type and concerns. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, ceramides, and natural oils to provide optimal hydration. Apply moisturizer within a few minutes of bathing and reapply throughout the day as needed.

Over-Exfoliating
Over-Exfoliating

Exfoliating too often or using harsh exfoliants can disrupt the skin's natural moisture balance and lead to dryness and irritation. While exfoliation is beneficial for removing dead skin cells and promoting cell turnover, it should be done in moderation. Opt for gentle exfoliants, such as chemical exfoliants with ingredients like alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs), and limit exfoliation to 1-2 times a week or as recommended by your dermatologist.

"By avoiding these common mistakes, you can help prevent dryness and maintain optimal skin hydration. If you have persistent dryness or skin concerns, it's always helpful to consult with a dermatologist for a personalised skincare routine and recommendations," says Dr Niti Gaur.
