People often have the misconception that sunscreens are for summer. But as experts point out, it's important to use sunscreen. "Whether you are indoors or outdoors or be it summer or winter season, go slather some sunscreen every day in the morning," says Neha Sharma, Estique Skin & Hair Clinic, Gurgaon. "Sunscreen is not just for summers. No matter how foggy it is outside; don’t step out without applying sunscreen. About 80% of UV rays from the sun can pass through the windows and clouds and cause damage to the skin. Therefore don’t be deluded into thinking that you are safe in winter from the sun," says dermatologist Dr Neha Sharma, Estique Skin & Hair Clinic, Gurgaon.
Dr Neha Sharma adds that it’s important to wear sunscreen no matter where you are, whether you are indoors or outdoors, whether you are having a meal or are at a pool or working at your desk. "Not applying sunscreen will not only lead to uneven skin tone but also lead to other concerns like premature ageing and even skin cancers," the dermatologist shares
The second benefit of sunscreen is that it prevents premature ageing. "Prolonged exposure to UV rays without adequate protection can lead to fine lines, wrinkles, sagging and age spots," says Dr Sharma.
Talking about the benefits of sunscreen, Dr Sharma says, "Sunscreen prevents tanning and discoloration helping you maintain a smoother and more even skin tone."
Prolonged UV rays exposure can lead to skin cancer so it's best to stay protected with sunscreen to lower the risk. "Sunscreen should be a non-negotiable part of your skincare routine to protect against the harmful effects of UV rays that can range from sunburn, pigmentation, dark spots, wrinkles and even cancer," says Dr Sharma.
