The first gold medal for India in the 18th edition of Asian Games was bagged by Bajrang Punia. While Sushil Kumar was the favourite as the Indian contingent went to Indonesia, the star who shone at the end was Punia. Punia clinched the gold medal in the men`s freestyle 65-kg category defeating Daichi Takatani of Japan 11-8 in the final. Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat scripted history as she became the first Indian woman to bag a gold medal in 50 kg freestyle wrestling category. While she was expected to get a stiff competition from Japan’s Yuki Irie, she defeated her hands down 6-2 to win the final. The gold also enabled Vinesh to achieve another feat as she became the only woman wrestler to win two medals in back-to-back Asian Games. Vinesh had earlier won a bronze medal in the 48kg category at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games. Vinesh also won back-to-back gold medals in Glasgow and Gold Coast Commonwealth Games this year. The 18th edition of Asian Games kicked off with much fanfare and celebration in Jakarta in Indonesia on Saturday. Contingents from across 46 countries converged to Indonesia to participate in Asia’s biggest sporting extravaganza. Over 10,000 athletes from across the countries are participating in the current edition of Asian Games. It is for the first time that India won the gold medal in women’s wrestling event, thanks to Vinesh Phogat. The multi-sport event is being co-hosted by Indonesian cities Jakarta and Palembang from August 18 to September 2.
