There are some legendary cricketers in world cricket who have entertained fans with their cricket on the field but at the same time, they have also battled alcoholism off the field. Here are 5 cricketers whose career either got ruined due to too much booze or almost got destroyed.
In 2013, after getting drunk Australian opener David Warner punched former England captain Joe Root at a bar in Birmingham. He got a big lesson and then did not touch alocohol for more than 2 years till he led SRH to their maiden title in 2016.
Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting once admitted in 1999 that he was punched by a stranger outside a nightclub in Sydney. At that time he was drunk and was subsequently dropped from the ODI squad.
Monty Panesar was one of the finest spinners from England but his indiscipline and habit of partying way too much led to his downfall. Once he urinated on two bouncers in front of a bar in London and after that he never played international cricket.
Clearly, one of the finest all-rounders the game has ever seen but this fine player too fell into the trap of alcohol. He always loved his glass of drink but in 2009 he came under scanner for celebrating a warm-up game win vs New Zealand with a couple of bottles more than needed and was thrown out of the team.
He was once seen as the next big thing in New Zealand cricket, arrived with a bang too vs India in 2009/10 but then booze and a flashy lifestyle led to his downfall. He was once attacked by a mob in a bar in Christchurch which almost took his life. He recovered and came back to cricket but he was no more the same player.
