Amid Russian invasion, Paris' Eiffel Tower lights up in blue and yellow in solidarity with Ukraine - See pics

At the request of Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, the Eiffel Tower was lit up in the national blue-and-yellow colours of Ukraine on Friday, which Hidalgo said was to express solidarity with the people of Ukraine in the wake of Russia`s attack.

The monument's operator said the monument will be illuminated in Ukraine's national colours 'in support of the Ukrainian people' for three nights. 

The Eiffel Tower, which is lit up nightly on the hour with sparkling white lights, often changes colour to mark notable events, for example the blue, white and red of the French flag. Amid the crisis, French President Emmanuel Macron has spoken to both U.S. President Joe Biden and Putin in trying to de-escalate the Ukraine conflict.

Russian missiles pounded Kyiv, families cowered in shelters and authorities told people to prepare petrol bombs to defend their capital, as Russian President Vladimir Putin urged the Ukrainian military to seize power and make peace.
