Pelosi has portrayed her trip to Taiwan as part of a US obligation to stand with democracies against autocratic countries.

At the Taiwanese Parliament, President Tsai Ing-wen said, "Taiwan is committed to maintaining peace & stability in the Taiwan Strait, and we will make Taiwan a key stabilising force for regional security ensuring a free & open Indo-Pacific."

Speaking at the event with US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi present, President of Taiwan Tsai Ing-wen said. "We will firmly uphold our nation's sovereignty & continue to hold the line of defence. At the same time, we wish to cooperate & work with unity with all democracies around the world to safeguard democratic values."

US Speaker Pelosi said that America has made a promise to stand with Taiwan. "On this strong foundation, we've a thriving partnership grounded in self-government & self-determination focused on mutual security in the region & world committed to economic prosperity," she added.

"Taiwan is flourishing democracy. It has proven to world that hope, courage & determination can build peaceful & prosperous future despite challenges it faces. Now, more than ever, America's solidarity with Taiwan is crucial, that's the message we bring in today," said US Speaker Pelosi in Taiwan.

China claims Taiwan as part of its territory, and it views visits by foreign government officials as them recognising the island's sovereignty. President Joe Biden has sought to calm that complaint, insisting there's no change in America's longstanding "one-China policy," which recognises Beijing but allows informal relations and defence ties with Taipei.

Soon after Pelosi's arrival, China announced a series of military operations and drills, which followed its promises of "resolute and strong measures" if Pelosi went through with her visit.
