In Pics: These Powerful Faces Likely To Run Bangladesh Interim Govt After Hasina's Exit

76-year-old Sheikh Hasina on Monday resigned as the Prime Minister Of Bangladesh after violence erupted over the issue of quota for jobs. The protests, which began last month, initially demanded the abolition of the quota system that reserves 30% of government jobs for families of freedom fighters who fought against Pakistan in 1971. However, the protests later turned into anti-government demonstrations.

The statue of her father, Mujibur Rahman, was also destroyed with hammers. Sheikh Hasina is currently at the Hindon Airbase in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, from where she may travel to Finland.

On Monday, thousands of protesters in the capital city of Dhaka vandalized and looted the Prime Minister's residence. 

Now, let's take a look at the faces that will shape the future of Bangladesh. The Bangladesh Army has entrusted around 10 individuals with the responsibility of forming an interim government. This includes journalists and representatives of the Hindu community.

Army Chief General Wakar-uz-Zaman announced Sheikh Hasina's resignation. Currently, he is responsible for maintaining law and order. He became the Chief of Bangladesh Army on June 23 this year. He has also served as a 4-star General and Principal Staff Officer in the Armed Forces Division. General Wakar is currently the most powerful person in Bangladesh. 

According to sources, Dr. Salimullah Khan and Dr. Asif Nazrul will lead the interim government. Additionally, retired Justice Mohammad Abdul Wahab Miah, retired General Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan, retired Major General Syed Iftikhar Uddin, Dr. Debraj Bhattacharya, Matiur Rahman Chowdhury, retired Brigadier General M Shakawat Hossain, Dr. Hussain Zillur Rahman, and Justice M A Matin will be part of the interim government.

Dr. Salimullah Khan, born into a Muslim Bengali family, is a writer and educator. He has studied law at Dhaka University and was associated with the student wing of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal.

On the other hand, Asif Nazrul is a journalist and Bangladeshi writer who often writes about politics.

The army has included five retired officers in the interim government. Debraj Bhattacharya represents the Hindu community and is a renowned economist and public policy analyst in Bangladesh. He was the first Executive Director of the Centre of Policy Dialogue in Dhaka and has worked extensively at the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies."
