While the reason for the accident has not yet been ascertained, local media reports say cops reached the spot soon after the tragedy and managed to pull out the two bodies. The car gradually went completely down and under before being fished out using ropes and with the help of locals who had gathered at the scene.

Winter months usually see a rise in the number of road accidents in the hilly state of Uttarakhand. Snow and low visibility are two main reasons for accidents although it is not yet established if the two caused Thursday's tragedy.
