Panguni Uthiram 2018: Know why this day is auspicious

Mumbai: Panguni Uthiram is one of the most auspicious and significant dates in the Tamil Calendar. A number of glorious events took place on this day and hence it is of great importance.

The day is observed in the twelfth and the last month of the Tamil calendar known as Panguni when Uthiram Nakshatram (Uttara Phalguni) prevails. 
According to drikpanchang, Panguni Uthiram Tithi began at around 7:27 am on March 30 and will end at 6:31 am on March 31st.

It is believed that Goddess Gauri (Parvati / Durga) entered matrimony with Lord Shiva in Kanchipuram on this day and hence it is also known as Gauri Kalyanam day. On this day, even Lord Murugan (Kartikeya - son of Mata Parvati and Lord Shiva) tied the nuptial knot with Devayanai. Devotees visit temples dedicated to Lord Murugan to offer prayers and celebrate the auspiciousness of this divine marital union.

On this day,  Uthiram Nakshatram coincides with full moon day.

Besides divine marriages, this day also marks the emergence of Lord Ayyappa (son of Lord Shiva and the Mohini avatar of Lord Vishnu). 

Moreover, it marks the emergence of Goddess Mahalakshmi, who made her presence felt during the Samudra Manthan or Kshirasagara Manthan when the Devas and the Asuras were churning the ocean to derive the nectar of immortality.
