1st Test, New Zealand vs Australia: Brendon McCullum falls for duck on Day 1, visitors in total control

Wellington: The Kiwi fans who gathered in big numbers at the Basin Reserve for Brendon McCullum's 100th Test were left disappointed after the Aussies took total control on Day 1 of the first Test.

Steve Smith's decision to field first after winning the toss proved to be a brilliant one as Australian bowlers dominated right throughout the first innings and bowled the hosts out for just 183 runs.

After dismissing openers Martin Guptill (18) and Tom Latham (6) for paltry scores, Australia's bowling spearhead Josh Hazlewood went on to scalp Brendon McCullum (0) and BJ Watling (17).

Peter Siddle and Nathan Lyon picked three wickets apiece.

The Kiwis lost their ninth wicket at the score of 137, post which Mark Craig (41*) and Trent Boult (24) added a valuable 47-run stand for the last wicket.

In reply, Tim Southee brought back smiles on faces of the Kiwi fans when he dismissed Australian openers Joe Burns (0) and David Warner (5) with just five runs on board. But the Black Caps had to wait for their third breakthrough as Steve Smith and Usman Khawaja resurrected the innings with an impressive 126-run stand for the third wicket.

At stumps, Australia were trailing by 36 runs with six wickets remaining. Khawaja (57*) and Voges (7*) were the two unbeaten batsmen at the crease.
