After successful IPL team auction, BCCI contemplating over another T20 league

New Delhi: Considering the number of bidders who wanted to own an Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise for the next two years in the recently concluded team auction, the Board of Cricket for Control in India (BCCI) is contemplating to come up with another T20 league.

According to a report in The Economic Times, BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur said that the Indian board is thinking about it.

"We are thinking about this, considering the number of people who wanted to own an IPL team," Thakur said.

The board could fit the league in the window left by the scrapping of Champions League, which failed to excite the fans.

There were also talks about 10 teams participating in IPL's next edition but Thakur said that an eight-team format was the best.

"If we have 10 teams, we will not be able to fit them in the IPL window and that would also mean more 4pm games that do not bring in the kind of TRP the evening games do and the quality of the game too suffers," he explained.

Earlier on Tuesday, the BCCI awarded the contracts for two new IPL teams to Intex and New Rising.

Mobile phone manufacturer Intex group will pay 10 crores for Rajkot, while Sanjeev Goenka-owned New Rising consortium will shell out 16 crores for Pune.

The teams were sold through the unique reverse bidding process for which the base price was set at Rs 40 crore and bidders had to quote an amount less than that. The lowest bidder was given the franchises.

The new team auction took place post the suspension of CSK and RR for the involvement some of their officials and co-owners in the 2013 IPL spot-fixing scandal, which was probed by the Supreme Court-appointed Justice (retd) R M Lodha committee.

Top 10 players from CSK and RR will go on sale at Players Draft scheduled for December 15.
