All's well with the Eden Garden, says BCCI's grounds committee chairman

Kolkata: The Board's grounds and pitches committee chairman Daljit Singh, roped in as a consultant to revamp Eden Gardens' drainage system, on Saturday said there would be no issue with the iconic venue hosting the World Twenty20 final scheduled to be held in April next year.

"There's still a long way to go for the World T20 final. There's no problem with the ground which would be ready before time," Singh said.

Singh did an inspection of the stadium after meeting with Cricket Association of Bengal president Sourav Ganguly.

"Everything is fine. We will start the revamp work which will take about 10 days. We're also getting new covers," Ganguly said before heading to Mumbai for the Board's working committee meeting to be held tomorrow.

As per the revamp plan, coring would be done across the ground and sand will be filled up in the pits.

"About 50 truckloads of sand would be required and the job would start after the Durga Puja break," an official said.

It remains to be seen whether the Eden would be ready before its next outing -- Bengal's Ranji fixture against Vidarbha on November 7.

The historic venue drew a lot of flak after its failure to hold India-South Africa T20I on October 8, which was washed out despite rain occurring more than six hours before the match.

It's curator Prabir Mukherjee was blamed for the fiasco and the veteran had stopped coming and only recently the charge was handed over to former joint-secretary Sujan Mukherjee who's also curator of Bengal's cricket academy in Kalyani.
