AUS vs IND: Rohit Sharma completes 5000 ODI runs, wins Man of the Series award

New Delhi: The talent of Rohit Sharma once again came to the fore on Saturday as India registered a consolation win in the five-match One-Day International series in Australia.

The 28-year-old failed to register his third century of the series, missing by one run, but, in the process, became the 12th Indian to crossed the 5000-run mark in ODIs. After 142 innings in 148 matches, he has 5008 runs with 10 hundreds and 28 fifties.

Playing a controlled innings, Rohit stitched a 123-run opening stand with Shikhar Dhawan to give India a solid foundation to chase Australia's 330.

He looked all set to notch up a third hundred of the series, but perished trying to play a cut shot off John Hastings. Mathew Wade completed a clean catch off a faintest of nicks, behind the wicket.

India won the match by six wickets with two balls remaining.

After the match, he said that despite missing out on the hundred, he is not frustrated, as India won the match. And he is determined to keep scoring runs for the team.

Rohit returned as the opt scorer of the series with 441 runs and earned the Man of the Series award. This is the second instance He has scored 400 or more runs in a bilateral ODI series.

In the 2013-14 series against Australia, he scored 491 runs, including two hundreds. For the record, South Africa's Hashim Amla (against the West Indies in 2015) is the only other batsman to have achieved such a feat -- scoring 400+ runs in a series against the same opponents.

However, the record for individual aggregate in a bilateral series belongs to Zimbabwean Hamilton Masakadza, in their 2009 series against Kenya, with 467 runs. Pakistan's Salman Butt scored 451 runs against Bangladesh in 08. Another Pakistani batsman Mohammad Hafeez scored 448 runs against Sri Lanka in UAE in 2013.
