SAARC on Saturday signed two important conventions which seek to prevent trafficking of women and children for prostitution and the use of child labour in the region.
The two conventions were signed by external affairs minister Jaswant Singh and the foreign ministers of the other six SAARC members in the presence of SAARC leaders at the inaugural ceremony of the association`s eleventh summit.
In his address to the summit, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee pleaded for the protection of the rights of women and children in the region.
The convention on trafficking among women and children for prostitution provides for extradition or prosecution under national laws of the people involved in this menace. It also seeks assistance in investigation for repatriation of the victims of trafficking. The text of the convention was finalised at the SAARC summit in Colombo in 1998. The convention on child labour lists concrete and effective steps needed to be taken in the region for child welfare to prevent the exploitation of children.
