Dilip Vengsarkar backs in-form Shreyas Iyer for India glory
The high praise from Colonel will no doubt come as another strong confidence booster for the Mumbai star.
New Delhi: Former Indian captain Dilip Vengsarkar on Thursday offered a ringing endorsement of domestic cricket's rising star Shreyas Iyer.
With a string of consistent scores, Iyer is widely regarded as the first in line among batsmen waiting to enter the India side.
The high praise from Colonel will no doubt come as another strong confidence booster for the Mumbai star.
"Shreyas is definitely ready for international cricket. I feel he could be the match-winner India is looking for. Shreyas is not afraid of any attack. He is aggressive and plays positive cricket all the time. What adds to his abilities is the confidence that he has in himself,” Vengsarkar was quoted as saying by DNA newspaper.
Vengsarkar is credited for having discovered players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and spotting the potential in MS Dhoni to lead India.
The Delhi Daredevils opener has been a prolific run-getter on the domestic circuit of late.
Iyer's recent scores include 57 and 91 against Railways, 137 against Uttar Pradesh, 173 against Baroda, 83 against Tamil Nadu and 200 against Punjab.
However, the right-hander wasn't able to replicate his form for Board President XI against South Africa at CCI where he perished for 9, as well as for India A where his highest score was 49 in three outings.
With Iyer knocking on the door for his international debut, pressure of performance will only increase on batting superstars of Team India.
