Winter chill freezes North India
North India is reeling under intense cold wave condition that has lead to more than 140 deaths across the region.

New Delhi: North India is reeling under intense cold wave condition that has lead to more than 140 deaths across the region.
National Capital Region of Delhi is under a spell of cold wave with the minimum hovering around 5 degree Celsius on Tuesday morning.
Normal life was hit in poll-bound Uttarkhand with parts of Dehradun receiving snowfall after almost 60 years even as tourists in Nainital enjoyed snowfall as a thick blanket of white covered the city. Weathermen have forecast more snowfall in the higher reaches of Kumaon and Garhwal. The Kashmir Valley is freezing with - for the first time this winter - even the maximum temperature across the Valley plunging below freezing point. Srinagar city recorded a low of minus 4.2°C and a maximum of minus 0.5°C.
However, the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, the valley`s lifeline was opened to one-way traffic after being closed for three days. In the Jammu region, winter capital Jammu recorded a low of 5.1 degrees Celsius.
Electricity was restored in parts of Jammu and Kashmir following repair of power transmission lines at Kishenpur-Wagoora and Pampore. Unprecedented snowfall in the higher reaches of Pir Panjal mountains had resulted in a fault on the Transmission Line, affecting 19 grid stations. In neighbouring Himachal Pradesh, capital Shimla saw a moderate spell of snowfall - 24.6 cm of snow - but recorded a minimum temperature of minus 2.9 degrees Celsius, the seasons lowest.
Manali received moderate snowfall of 19 cm early Monday. It experienced a low of minus 1.4 degrees Celsius.
The heavy snowfall in the state`s apple-growing belt brought cheer to apple farmers. It also snapped air and road links in the interior parts of the state.
In Punjab, Amritsar was the coldest at 0.4 degree celsius, 3 degrees below normal. Punjab`s largest city, Ludhiana recorded a minimum temperature of 4.3 degrees Celsius. Certain pockets of Pathankot received snowfall, first time in 40 years.
In Haryana, Hisar town was the coldest at 4.2 degrees Celsius. Chandigarh, the capital of both states recorded a low of 6 degrees Celsius.
Cold wave conditions persist in many parts of Uttar Pradesh as well.
At zero degree, Mount Abu was the coldest in Rajasthan, followed by Churu which recorded 0.9 degree celsius. Capital Jaipur recorded a minimum of 5.4 degrees Celsius.
Pune in Maharashtra is also shivering with today’s minimum expected to be 6° Celsius.
