Former South Africa cricketer charged with match-fixing in Ram Slam

The unnamed player was charged following attempts to influence results in South Africa's domestic competition, the Ram Slam T20 Challenge.

New Delhi: In a sensational revelation, an unnamed former South African cricketer has reportedly been charged with corruption involving match-fixing.

According to a report in ESPNcricinfo on Wednesday, the player was charged following attempts to influence results in South Africa's domestic competition, the Ram Slam T20 Challenge.

He is also understood to be the same "intermediary" who was the subject of a Cricket South Africa (CSA) press release in December.

The report claimed that the person had also been charged with "failing, or refusing without compelling justification, to cooperate with an investigation carried out by an anti-corruption official."

If convicted, the said player is likely to receive a life ban from cricket as South Africa has a stringent anti-corruption law.

Besides, a legal case is being said to be prepared against a number of domestic players for corruption during this season's domestic Twenty20 tournament. And these players are expected to be charged with the lesser crime of "failure to report" suspicious or illegal activity.

The tournament, which ran between November 1 and December 12, 2015, was won by the Titans who beat the Dolphins by seven wickets in a one-sided final at SuperSport Park in Centurion.

It's worth mentioning that so-called "Hansie clause" was introduced to South Africa's Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act Law in 2004, following the 2000 infamous match-fixing scandal involving former skipper Hansie.
