New Delhi: The indomitable West Indies opener Chris Gayle on Wednesday overtook former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum as the player to hit most sixes in Twenty20 Internationals.

In their 2016 ICC Twenty20 opener against England, Gayle played probably the most destructive innings of the tournament so far.

In a display of brutal hitting, the left-handed batsman scored an unbeaten 100 runs off 48 deliveries. And his innings made an otherwise impressive total of 182 runs look too meagre for West Indies, winning the match by six wickets with 11 balls to spare.

He reached the hundred off 47th balls. Gayle remained unbeaten on 100 off 48 balls, with 11 sixes and five fours.

He is also the first player to hit a century in the history of tournament, against South Africa in 2007.

Earlier, the record for most sixes in T20Is was in the name of McCullum. The Kiwi batsman had his 91 sixes in 71 matches.

After today's eleven sixes, Gayle need two more to become the first player to hit 100 sixes on T20Is.
