ICC Twenty20 World Cup trophy is our goal, says Australia skipper Steve Smith

New Delhi: One trophy that has eluded Australia's cabinet is the ICC Twenty20 World Cup and skipper Steve Smith has said that it is the side's goal to achieve that in the upcoming 2016 edition next month.

"It's one that's alluded us, the T20 World Cup, and it would be great to win that trophy, that's our goal," Smith said.

The 2016 ICC T20 World Cup will be held in India from March 8 and Smith feels although it will be a tough tour, the Aussies have the resources to go all the way.

"It's going to be a tough tour in India, in conditions that are foreign to us. But it's really exciting and I think we've got the squad to give that tournament a real shake."

Australia are the world champions in 50-overs cricket and also number one in the ICC Test world rankings. The T20Is is the next thing they want to target and reach the summit in order to get a hold in all fronts of the cricket field.

Australia's next campaign ahead of the World Cup is the T20I series against South Africa. It is the ideal preparation ahead of the mega March 8-April 3 tournament.

Australia were drubbed by India 3-0 in the T20I series last month and Smith feels India will be tough opponents to beat on their home soil.

"I think India in Indian conditions are going to be very tough to beat. They're a very good side as we saw out here in the three Twenty20s we played in Australia so I think they're going to be right up there."

Australia are rich in resources and boast of a heavy batting line-up and will look at the players to deliver the goods. Smith said the side has some destructive options to choose from.

"I'm not really sure of the make up of our top three or four yet, obviously, there are a lot guys who fill those positions. We've got three games to have a look at that before the World Cup. We've got some very destructive and talented batters up the top of the order that we can choose from."

Australia get their World T20 campaign underway against New Zealand in Dharamsala on March 18.
