New Delhi: Veteran cricketer Shahid Afridi stepped down as Pakistan's T20 captain on Sunday after team's poor show in the 2016 ICC World Twenty20 and Asia Cup.

However, the 36-year-old all-rounder has made it clear that he wants to continue playing for the country.

According to a report in ESPN Cricinfo, Afridi said he intends to continue playing "for my country and league cricket".

Before the start of the on-going ICC WT20, Afridi had shared his intention to retire from international cricket after the end of the coveted tourney.

But later he was quoted as saying that he was facing "huge pressure" from family and friends to not retire from international cricket.

Afridi also made it clear that the decision of quitting the captaincy had come of his own volition.

He faced lot of criticism after Pakistan's poor show the World T20.

The mercurial cricketer played 27 Tests for Pakistan before retiring from the format in 2010 with 1716 runs and 48 wickets.

In 398 ODIs, he has 8064 runs and 395 wickets, while 98 T20 International appearances have fetched him 1405 runs and 97 wickets.
