India vs Australia: Spin-obsessed Aussies bowled over by Umesh Yadav on Pune rank turner

New Delhi: Out of syllabus Australia run into mighty impressive Umesh Yadav on the first day of Pune Test on Thursday.

The 29-year-old pacer from Nagpur was supposed to play a supporting role to the Indian spin trio of Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Jayant Yadav.

But on Pune's rank turner, Yadav produced a brilliant display of pace bowling by claiming four Australian wickets to give India an upper hand in the series opener.

On the eve of the match, Australia captain Steve Smith predicted that the Pune pitch "will take spin from ball one." It turned out to be a good judgment.

And Aussie openers David Warner and Matt Renshaw played with caution even as Indian captain Virat Kohli opted to use Ashwin as a new ball bowler, pairing with Ishant Sharma. But the visitors were in for a surprise.

Australia were 82 for without losing a wicket in 27 overs, then came Umesh. The right-handed pacer started his spell with a no-ball, but the bowling change proved a masterstroke. He removed dangerous Warner (38), bowled by a straight delivery.

It was break India needed, as Ashwin, Jadeja and Jayant also joined the wicket hunt. But again, it was Umesh who did the damage by removing three more wickets – those of Matthew Wade (8) LBW, Steve O'Keefe (0) caught behind by a flying Wriddhiman Saha and Nathan Lyon (0) LBW, with the last two wickets coming off successive deliveries.

Australia were 256/9 from 94 overs at Day 1 stumps, and a happy Indian team mobbed Umesh for his brilliant bowling. His figures read: 12-3-32-4.

It's indeed a rare sight to see an Indian pacer dominating the proceedings in India where traditionally spinners hold sway in turning tracks.
