New Delhi: Mahendra Singh Dhoni shocked cricket world on Wednesday by stepping down as the captain of Indian ODI and T20I teams.

He said that he will continue to play but, it certainly is the end of the era. And just like his Test retirement, the 35-year-old today proved that he lives by his own rule.

Here's everything you need to know about him:

He made India debut in December 2004 against Bangladesh in an ODI.

He became India captain, taking over from Rahul Dravid in 2007.

He is the only captain to hold the three ICC-sanctioned trophies simultaneously — World Twenty20, World Cup and Champions Trophy

In 2008, he helped India win Test series in New Zealand and West Indies.

In 2013, his Test side beat Australia 4-0 at home.

He has played 90 Tests, scoring 4876 with six hundreds and 33 fifties. His highest score is 224.

He has so far played 283 ODIs, scoring 9110 with nine hundreds and 61 fifties. His highest score is 183.

He has played 73 T20Is so far, scoring 1112 with a highest score of 48 not out.

He is regarded as one of the greatest finishers, and has trademark shot 'helicopter shot'.

But the most enduring moment from his illustrious career will be that of 2011 World Cup winning six against Sri Lanka at Mumbai.

He married to Sakshi Rawat, and the couple was blessed with a daughter, Ziva, 6 February 2015.

Dhoni is co-owner of Indian Super League franchise Chennaiyin FC.

And in the Indian Premier League, he led Chennai Super Kings to victory in 2010 and 2011. He is now with Rising Pune Supergiants

He has stated desire for bikes.

A biopic was made on his life, titled M. S. Dhoni: The Untold Story. It was released on September 30, 2016.
