New Delhi: Murali Vijay on Saturday became the first Indian opener to score a Test hundred in 14 years at Wankhede stadium as India post a strong reply to England's first innings total of 400 in the fourth Test match.

Vijay, 32, reached the milestone off 231 balls in the first session of third day's play in Mumbai. He thus became the second batsman, after team-mate Cheteshwar Pujara, to hit two hundreds in the five-match series.

It's also his eighth overall ton, and third against England.

The last opener to score a hundred at the venue was Virender Sehwag, against West Indies in 2002. Legendary Sunil Gavaskar is the only other Indian opener to get a hundred at Wankhede.

In reply to England's 400 all out, India were well placed at Day 3 stumps, with Virat Kohli (47) pacing the innings brilliantly, after the fall of Vijay, who made a brilliant 136 off 282.
