India vs New Zealand, 3rd Test: Virat Kohli & Co were given a 5-run penalty by umpires on Day 2 – Find out why!

New Delhi: A strange thing happened during the second day's play of the third Test between India and New Zealand at Indore on Sunday.

When New Zealand's first innings' started, in reply to India's 557/5d, the scoreboard already had five runs on it before a ball was even bowled. The reason was a penalty to Ravindra Jadeja, and India.

During India's innings, Jadeja received a second warning for running in the middle of the pitch, and an enraged umpire Bruce Oxenford awarded five penalty runs. (ALSO READ: India vs New Zealand, 3rd Test, Day 2 LIVE)

That happened off the penultimate delivery of the 168th over, bowled by Trent Boult. Jadeja was previously cautioned by Kumar Dharmasena for running into the protected area.

It's certainly not the first time a team was awarded the five penalty runs, but for different reasons.

In 2010, former India opener Virender Sehwag was involved in such a controversy, after he 'deliberately' pushed a Hashim Amla shot to the boundary line. South Africa were awarded penalty runs five runs.

A month earlier, in January, the same year, the Proteas were given five runs after the ball hit England wicket-keeper Matt Prior's helmet in Cape Town.

A similar penalty runs were given to Pakistan in 2002,  when the ball hit Sri Lankan wicket-keeper Kumar Sangakkara's helmet placed.

India declared the innings the very next over, with the scoreboard reading 557 for 5. The highlight of the innings was the epic 365-run partnership between skipper Virat Kohli (211) and Ajinkya Rahane (188).

Kohli, who scored 200 against West Indies in North Sound in July, became the first Indian player to hit two double centuries as a captain.

His knock was also second highest by a captain against New Zealand, behind Sachin Tendulkar's 217 at Ahmedabad in 1999.

It was also the second time that India's No. 4 and 5 batsmen have both scored 150+ runs in an innings. Sachin Tendulkar(241 no.) and VVS Laxman (178) have achieved the feat against Australia at Sydney Cricket Ground in the tour of 2003-04.

India took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series before the Indore Test.
