Bihar Minister of State for Jail Ashok Kumar Choudhary said that over 36,000 prisoners were lodged in various jails in the state which have the capacity for only 18,000 inmates. Replying to a question of Congress member Mahachandra Prasad Singh in the legislative council, Choudhary said there was also an increase of average four per cent in the number of prisoners every year.
He said the number of prisoners who made good their escape from the jails was 22 while another 44 undertrial prisoners escaped when they were being produced before the judiciary from January to December last year.
Choudhary said a meeting would be held in Patna on March 25 to deliberate on the issue of fixing responsibility of jail breaks on jail superintendents and deputy jail superintendents.
