Shashank Manohar had to quit as SC is to hear SLP on his complicity with Lalit Modi: Subramanian Swamy

New Delhi: Minutes after the news broke that BCCI president and ICC chairman Shashank Manohar has stepped down from both the posts, Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy gave a new twist to the story.

Swamy took to micro-blogging site Twitter and said that Manohar had to quit as the Supreme Court is about to hear his Special Leave Petition (SLP), where he has shown his complicity with Lalit Modi.

However, according to the news which is coming from close quarters, Manohar's move has come in wake of a proposed structural revamp of the International Cricket Council (ICC), that bars the chairman from occupying any position in member boards.

Manohar's resignation has come days ahead of ICC's secret ballot to elect its first independent chairman.

In a recent meeting in Dubai, the ICC decided that its chairman will be an independent one and will be elected in a secret ballot in May. The decision was taken following the Board and Committee meetings.

"The election process will be overseen by the ICC's independent Audit Committee Chairman and all present and past ICC directors will be eligible to contest the election. However, candidates can only be nominated by a fellow ICC director who, in turn, will be allowed to provide no more than one nominee. Any nominee with the support of at least two Full Member ICC directors will be put forward as a candidate for election," the ICC had said in a release after the meeting.
