New Delhi: Months after he was appointed as the president of Board of Cricket for Control in India (BCCI), Shashank Manohar on Tuesday stepped down from the post.
Manohar took over as chief in October 2015 after the death of Jagmohan Dalmiya. This was Manohar's second term as BCCI president.
The move has come in wake of a proposed structural revamp of the International Cricket Council (ICC), that bars the chairman from occupying any position in member boards.
In a recent meeting in Dubai, the ICC decided that its chairman will be an independent one and will be elected in a secret ballot in May. The decision was taken following the Board and Committee meetings.
"The election process will be overseen by the ICC's independent Audit Committee Chairman and all present and past ICC directors will be eligible to contest the election. However, candidates can only be nominated by a fellow ICC director who, in turn, will be allowed to provide no more than one nominee. Any nominee with the support of at least two Full Member ICC directors will be put forward as a candidate for election," the ICC said in a release after the meeting.
As per this rule, Manohar, who replaced N Srinivasan as ICC's chairman in November 2015, would not have been eligible to contest for the chairman's post in the upcoming ICC elections, if he had held on to his position with BCCI.
Manohar also resigned as the ICC chairman today.
Manohar's resignation has come days ahead of ICC's secret ballot to elect its first independent chairman.
Manohar is in line to become ICC's first ever independent chairman and could hold the position till 2021.
