New Delhi: The controversy surrounding the naming of Salman Khan as the Goodwill Ambassador of the Indian contingent for 2016 Rio Olympics fails to subside.

On Monday, former India batsman Vinod Kambli came out in defence of Salman Khan, and asked Gautam Gambhir — one of the many sportspersons to criticise the move to associate sport with the Bollywood star — not to be so sad.

Kambli, 44, took to micro-blogging site Twitter and suggested to the outspoken Kolkata Knight Riders captain that the decision to rope in the actor as an ambassador was taken by the Indian Olympic Association.

"Mr Gambhir Dnt become so gam..... bhir @BeingSalmanKhan being the goodwill Ambassador. Its been decided by the IOA," Kambli wrote.

Earlier on Monday, Gambhir said "I would have been happy if someone like Abhinav Bindra would have been named as an ambassador. There are a lot of sportspersons who have done a lot for sport. Ideally, one among them should have been given that responsibility."
