Virat Kohli condemns ill-treatment of women

New Delhi: Indian Test captain Virat Kohli has expressed his concerns over social problems, especially rapes, molestations and eve-teasing.

Regarded as one of the most outspoken cricketers, Kohli condemned the ill-treatment of women, and said it's the root of all crimes against women.

Talking to The Hindu, the 27-year-old said, "It has obviously been a major concern for a long time, especially rapes, molestations and eve-teasing. It is very disrespectful to look at women in that way."

“It comes from the kind of society that we have built over the years where women have always been known to be treated as inferiors. How can this be done? This mentality is disturbing and needs to be condemned,” he added.

Recently, the Union home ministry approved the setting up of dedicated investigative units on crimes against women (IUCAW) in 564 districts across the country.

The Rs 324-crore plan, to be financed from the Nirbhaya Fund corpus, will see the Centre bearing 50% of the financial burden on creation of these special investigative units by the state governments.
