Waqar Younis resigns as Pakistan cricket team coach

Younis ruled out the fact that he was quitting because of losing matches during Asia Cup and World T20.

New Delhi: Legendary fast bowler Waqar Younis ​on Monday resigned as head coach of Pakistan national cricket team.

However, while announcing his resignation, Younis ruled out the fact that he was quitting as head coach because of losing matches during Asia Cup and ICC World Twenty 20.

As per the report in Pakistan Today, Waqar said he worked as the team’s head coach for 19 months with honesty, but someone had to be made the scapegoat.

Younis, however, added that he was at disposal of the Pakistan Cricket Board whenever it requires his services.

Interestingly, a day before, Waqar had refused to step down from his position despite being in the line of fire for the team's disastrous World T20 campaign, saying that he will not go out as a "villain".

"I am being portrayed as the villain. If the Board wants to remove me they first have to inform me in writing. I have no issues but I will not go like this," Waqar told PTI.

Pakistan team and its management faced severe criticism after team's poor performances in Asia Cup and World T20.

In the recently concluded World Twenty20, Pakistan lost three out of their four group matches of the tournament and failed to make it to the knockout rounds.
