FIFA World Cup 2018 Group A points table: Uruguay top, Russia 2nd, Saudi Arabia 3rd and Egypt 4th

Uruguay demolished hosts Russia 3-0 to take the top spot in FIFA World Cup 2018 Group A while Saudi Arabia secured a consolation 2-1 win against Egypt in the other match on Monday. Both Uruguay and Russia are into the Round of 16 (pre-quarterfinals) while Saudi Arabia and Egypt fly back home.

Uruguay had already secured their passage into the last 16 by winning their first two matches against Egypt and Saudi Arabia by an identical margin of 1-0. But their lackluster performance had brought in a lot of criticism. On the other hand, hosts Russia had been red-hot, winning their matches against Saudi Arabia and Egypt by an impressive 5-0 and 3-1 margins. However, Uruguay silenced the home crowd by demolishing a 10-man Russia 3-0 in Samara Arena, Samara.

In the second match of Group A, it was a battle of prestige between Saudi Arabia and Egypt where the former clinched a last-minute winner to end with a scoreline of 2-1 in their favour.

Uruguay face Portugal in the Round of 16 at Fisht Stadium, Sochi on June 30, Saturday at 11:30 pm IST. Spain will play against Russia on July 1, Sunday at Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow at 7:30 pm IST.
