New Delhi: Newcastle United finally registered their first win of the 2015-16 Premier League season in a eight-goal thriller, thanks to four-goal hero Georginio Wijnaldum's brilliance against fellow strugglers Norwich City at St. James Park on Sunday.
Needing a strong response following the 1-6 humiliation at Manchester City in the previous gameweek, Steve McLaren's side rode onto Dutch midfielder Wijnaldum's brilliance to collect first full three games, with a 6-2 win in front of home crowd.
Wijnaldum, a youth product of Feyenoord, wreaked havoc in the Canaries defence with timely runs, combining well with experienced Frenchman Moussa Sissoko.
The 24-year-old former PSV Eindhoven player opened the scoring in the 14th minute of a Sissoko pass. But Congolese forward Dieumerci Mbokani equalised in the 20th minute off a Swede Martin Olsson play, before Wijnaldum found his second of the night with yet another set-up from Sissoko in the 26th minute.
Then, Spaniard Ayoze Perez increased the lead with a 33rd minute strike., only to find Olsson setting up Nathan Redmond within seconds to to pull one back before the break.
After the break, the Magpies took full control with two quick goals from Serbian Aleksandar Mitrovic scoring in the 64th minute, once again off a Sissoko pass. Wijnaldum completed his hat-trick two minutes later from a Daryl Janmaat lofted pass.
With five minutes to the regulation time, Wijnaldum found the back of the net with a long ranger to give himself the four-goal haul, and the much needed win to his team.
With the win, Newcastle have climbed out of the bottom position but still lie in the relegation zone, with six points at 18th. And Alex Neil's Canaries have dropped to 16th with nine points.
In the gameweek nine's last match, 15th place Stoke City travel to 13th place Swansea on Tuesday.
