Struggling Aston Villa sack Tim Sherwood as manager

New Delhi: Struggling English Premier League outfit Aston Villa have sacked Tim Sherwood as their manager on Sunday.

"The Board has monitored the performances closely all season and believes the results on the pitch were simply not good enough and that a change is imperative," the club said in a statement released today.

Yesterday, Villa suffered their sixth straight league loss, 1-2 at home to Swansea, and now lie at the bottom of the table with only four points from 10 games.

His eight-month reign at Villa Park failed to inspire the club, despite coming with a reputation as one of the raising managers in the league. Before joining Villa this February, he helped Tottenham Hotspur to a fifth place finish in the previous season.

Sherwood, 46, did helped the club to the FA Cup final, which they lost to Arsenal, but escaped relegation last time by three points, finishing 17th.

"However, the Club would like to place on record its sincere thanks to Tim for all his efforts during a difficult period last season and for the many positive contributions he has made to the entire football setup during his time with the Club. We wish him well in the future," the statement continued.

The club also confirmed that, "Assistant manager Ray Wilkins, first-team coach Mark Robson and performance analyst Seamus Brady have also left with immediate effect and do so with our best wishes."

In the absence of a permanent manager, the club will be managed by Kevin MacDonald on interim basis.
