Latest Updates
Update from hockey
India women's team have lost 0-1 to Australia in the semifinal. And will now look to fight for the bronze playoff.
That's it from the Games on Day 8. India have totaled seven medals on Thursday. We will be bringing Live updates to you of Day 9 tomorrow morning. We sign off now and hope to catch you on Friday morning.
Update from Hockey
India have missed a golden chance in the circle to equalise in the 57th minute. Monica took a fraction of a second longer to line herself up for the shot but Aussies made amends and cleared the ball. Indians are launching attack after attack. Another chance goes begging. Rani Rampal fires it wide in the last minute of the game.
India get a Penalty corner
But this is brilliant defending from the hosts. No team has succeeded in netting from penalty corners. Oh!! Another PC for India here. They really need to score but the drag flick is once again cleared by the Aussie defender. India have come back strong in the final quarter. The Aussies have now formed a bastion and are thwarting every Indian attack.
Update from Hockey
The goal seems to have spurred on the Australians and their attacks have multiplied now. Indians, on the other hand, are playing catch up hockey. They have defended well but have rarely seen in the Australian citadel. The fourth quarter has just started. The scoreline is India 0-1 Australia.
Goal!!!!
Australia have scored. This is brilliant field goal and even better stick work there from the hosts. A reverse hit was supplied in the circle and the volley needed just a deflection to sail into the net. Australia go ahead in the 38th minute. India 0-1 Australia
Penalty Corner for Australia.
Indian defender fouls in the circle and the referee signals PC. And India have saved it again. That was brave defending as the strong hit was blocked by the raging defender.
Welcome back. The third quarter has just started and India will be looking to do something different. Maybe, go on the offensive to have scoring opportunities. Till now, the Australians have really pressed hard and India have defended really well. But India need to score.
News from Hockey
The Indian women's team have managed to hold mighty Australia with an impeccable defense. After the end of second quarter, India 0-0 Australia.
News from Table Tennis
India's Mouma Das was beaten 4-1 by Singapore's Mengyu Yu 1-4 in the quarterfinals of the singles competition.
Good news from Discus Final
While Punia has won the silver, Navjeet pulled herself up and won the bronze with an effort of 57.43. Dani Stevens won the gold.
Update from Hockey
Currently, both India and Australia are mapping each other's D but just seconds before the hooter for the first quarter, India nearly conceded a field goal but good defence ensured India could go unhurt in the breather. India 0-0 Australia after 1st quarter.
Discus Final
Punia fouls her penultimate attempt while Dani Stevens hurls 65 point something in her fifth. She could relax now as she seems to be the clear winner in the dicus event. Punia is gunning for a silver here. But her effort will still be an underwhelming one.
Discus Final
Seema Punia throws 58.54m in her fourth attempt. After crossing the 60m mark on the opening throw, she hasn't been able to better that mark and her performance has only dipped since. Unlike Punia, Stevens has bettered her previous mark with each throw. But Punia is definitely in contention for a silver. Navjeet Dhillon too seems devoid of energy here as she hurls a lowly 54.09 in her penultimate attempt.
Discus Final
Navjeet Dhillon has bettered her previous mark of 55.61 to 56.22 in her fourth attempt. This is clear that she will be vying for the bronze alongside New Zealand's Sositina Hakaei, who is currently sitting on 57.16. On the other hand, Australia's Dani Stevens is on fire. She hurled 68.26 in her fourth attempt to take almost an unassailable lead. Her current throw also helps her to create the Games Record.
Cutting to Hockey
In the fifth minute, India has conceded a penalty corner. The Indians defend the first attempt but the ball hit the Indian defender's leg. The review ensures the PC stays with Australia. In the next attempt though, Indian goalie makes a diving save to her right to stave off the danger.
And now what everyone was waiting for!!! It's the women's hockey semifinal. India against Australia. And it has kicked off.
Indians Neena Nellickal and Nayana James have bowed out of the women's Long jump final at 10th and 12th place respectively. The gold goes Canada's Christabel Nettey, silver to Australia's Brooke Stratton and bronze to England's Shara Proctor.
From the Discus Final, Navjeet wastes her third attempt as well. On the other hand, Dani Stevens better her previous throw's mark from 64.51 to 65.43. She is clearly inching towards the gold here and Punia might have to satisfy her with a silver.
News from Discus final
India's Seema Punia fouls her third attempt. One could understand nerves getting the better of the Indians now as they look to better Dani Steven's mark for the gold. A little extra here and a little over there has been costing India with their attempts.
Meanwhile, Australia's Dani Stevens maintains lead with an overwhelming throw of 64.51m in her second attempt. Indian Navjeet Dhillon has fouled her second attempt.
News from Discus final
Australia's Dani Stevens has hurled the discus to a distance of 61.39m to overtake Seema Punia. Second Indian in contention Navjeet Dhillon's first attempt remained at 55.61m and lies on 4th spot currently. Punia is second so far. Her second attempt resulted in an underwhelming 59.57m.
From the Badminton court, India's women's doubles pair of Ashwini Ponappa and N Sikki Reddy have blanked Singapore 21-18, 21-13 in the Round of 16 to qualify for the quarters.
Time for quick updates.
From the Table Tennis hall, India's singles player Manika Batra has beaten Singapore's Yihan Zhou 4-1 to reach the semis.
From the athletics arena, Nayana James and Neena Nellickal have been 12th and 10th in the long jump final.
And the women's discus throw final has just started. India's Seema Punia and Navjeet Dhillon will compete for the gold. And Seema Punia has started on a good note as she begins her discus final with a throw of 60.41m to take an early lead.
News from the women's long jump final
India's Nayana James is ranked 11th so far with a jump of 6.14m while Neena Nellickal leaped better -- 6.19m -- to stay at ninth. In terms of medal contention, both the Indians are quite far from the medal standards as the leaders are Canada, Australia and England with jumps of 6.84, 6.72 and 6.45m respectively. Though they still have attempts left, still the Indians will have to put more than their best to beat the leaders.
Back to the Athletics arena.
The final of the women's Long Jump final is underway at Gold Coast. India's Nayana James and Neena Nellickal are competing. We will be updating you on their performances in the final. Stay tuned.
