Patna: Police on Thursday used lathicharge to disperse Bihar Youth Congress workers who marched to a roundabout to gherao the state Assembly in protest against the Digha Acquired Land settlement scheme and Digha Acquired Land rules.
Police swung into action after hundreds of YC workers led by president Lalan Kumar marched from Gandhi Maidan to R block roundabout and tried to break the barricade.
The police also detained around 15 YC men. Claiming that the YC programme was "peaceful and democratic", Kumar said the police action was unwarranted and left some YC workers injured. "We have decided to intensify the stir if the rules are not abolished soon," Kumar said about the Digha Land Acquisition rules recently approved by the state government.
He said the agitation would be strengthened after a five-day Digha bandh and submission of memorandum to Governor Devanand Konwar seeking his immediate intervention. The scheme provided for regularisation of the unauthorised colonies that had come up on the 1,024 acres of Digha land acquired in 1972 by Bihar State Housing Board. PTI
