Mexico City: The Formula E championship will come to Mexico`s revamped F1 track in 2016, officials announced at a news conference in Mexico City on Thursday.
Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag announced that round five of next year`s championship will take place at Hermanos Rodriguez Circuit. The track was used earlier this year for Mexico City`s return to the Formula One, but the Formula E race will see a modified version used.
"It is a great satisfaction to announce that the Formula E will race here on this amazing circuit, in these impressive installations following the renovation of the Hermanos Rodriguez Circuit. We will race here on March 12," he said.
Formula E is the third major championship for the International Automobile Federation (FIA) and uses only electric-powered cars.
Agag told media that the organisation`s wish is for all cars to one day run on electricity.
"We believe that through car races, public perceptions can change for new generations, on electric cars. Our dream and our objective is for all cars in the world to be electric cars on day. If this happens, then our cities will undoubtedly be cleaner and our lives better," he added.
Respected F1 teams like McLaren have previously participated in the Formula E, with many using the chance to show off new technology.
Formula E driver Salvador Duran said that the world`s best are expected to take part in Mexico City in 2016.
"It`s a great category, the best drivers at a global level and apart from this, doing something for the world. I think that this message is something that we should always take: to improve, to transcend, to innovate and this category has undoubtedly done this," said Duran.
Tickets for Mexico City`s Formula E go on sale from December with prices started at 250 pesos (approximately $25).
