DMK protest: HC directs TN Govt to follow SC guidelines
Madras HC directed the TN Government to follow the SC guidelines while dealing with DMK`s fill the jail agitation on Wednesday.
Chennai: Madras High Court on Tuesday directed the Tamil Nadu Government to follow the Supreme Court guidelines while dealing with DMK`s fill the jail agitation tomorrow to condemn the alleged harassment of its leaders by the AIADMK regime.
`It goes without saying that the concerned respondents shall strictly follow the guidelines laid down by the Supreme Court in the case of Destruction of Public and Private Properties versus State of A.P.`, a bench comprising Chief Justice M Y Eqbal and Justice T S Sivagnanam said and disposed of a petition filed by a city advocate R Balasubramanian.
The petitioner had sought a direction to the state government and police to consider his June 28 representation for taking preventive measures to curb `barbarian` activity of the DMK and `avoid sufferings to the public` due to the protest. The Bench said although a direction, in the nature of an injunction, had been sought, the names of those against whom the order had been sought had not been impleaded as respondents.
Advocate General A Navaneethakrishnan submitted the government would look into the matter and ensure that law and order was maintained. The guidelines laid down by the apex court on the basis of reports submitted by the Justice K T Thomas Committee and F S Nariman Committee include a meeting between the organiser of the protest and police to lay down conditions for a peaceful march or protest, prohibiting carrying of weapons like knives and lathis and videographing of such protests to the maximum possible extent.
