New Delhi: Twenty-four hours after the death of iconic All Blacks winger Jonah Lomu, New Zealand rugby captain Richie McCaw announced his retirement on Thursday.

McCaw, 34, had a glittering career and led the All Blacks to two World Cup final victories, including last month's win over Australia in London.

The celebrated flankers retirement has been expected for some time, but the timing of it will certainly leave double blow to New Zealand rugby.

Yesterday, sport's first global super-star Lomu died died at the age of 40 from a rare and serious kidney ailment, which was first diagnosed in 1995.

McCaw played a world record 148 Tests, including another record 130 wins. He was a three-time winner of the World Player of the Year award.
