New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday praised the performance of Indian athletes at the Rio Paralympics 2016 and shared their life struggles while saluting their indomitable spirit.
"I will never forget the words of medal winner Deepa Malik, who while receiving her medal, said that she has defeated her disability. These words are very powerful. This time a total of 19 athletes including 3 women participated in Paralympics," he said while addressing the nation in the 24th edition of his `Mann Ki Baat` programme.
Prime Minister Modi further said, "Gold medal winner Devendra Jhajharia has won his second medal in javelin throw. He won his medal after 12 years. One grows older in 12 years. The level of enthusiasm also reduces after winning one medal. But Devendra has proved that physical state and advance age cannot deter indomitable will. He won gold again after 12 years. He was not a divyaang by birth he lost one of his arms due to electric current just think of the person who won his first gold at 23 and second at the age of 35."
"Mariyappan Thanga Velu has won gold medal in high jump. Thanga velu has lost his right leg when he was just 5 year old. Even his poverty didn`t obstruct his way. He neither belonged to a big city nor does he come middle class rich family. Despite facing obstacles through 21 years of his life and with physical challenges, he got a medal for the country with the strength of his determination," he added.
Prime Minister Modi said the medals won in Paralympics is a great achievement, adding this feat has done a great service to the divyaang brothers and sisters.
Prime Minister Modi said that Indian paralympians have not only woken up our sensitivities but also changed the way we look at divyaangjans.
He assured that his government is moving ahead to formulate a proper scheme for the development of Paralympics.
India bagged two gold, one silver and one bronze in the recently held event.
