Sindhu won the match 21-17, 21-13 in the repeat of the Olympic final. It lasted 46 minutes. In the semis, Sindhu will play Group A topper South Korea's Ji Hyun Sung, while former champion Tzu Ying Tai of Chinese Taipei takes on Group B topper Sun Yu in another semis.

PV Sindhu 21 - 13 Carolina Marin: Sindhu kept her cool and played a nice little dribble at the net, which Marin failed to keep in play on her the second return.

PV Sindhu 17 - 11 Carolina Marin: Terrible play from Marin. Another miss from the Spaniard, this time from her backhand. But she showed enough class to draw Sindhu to the net and place just out of the Indian's reach.


PV Sindhu 16 - 10 Carolina Marin: Marin then sent her return long, giving Sindhu complete control, or it seemed.

Sindhu missed her shot, and service over to Marin. The Spaniard then crashed her smash.


PV Sindhu 14 - 9 Carolina Marin: The reigning world champion won another couple of points to keep her chances alive. But she missed her her smash, just like Sindhu did three points back.


PV Sindhu 13 - 7 Carolina Marin: Another couple of points from Sindhu, but the Indian shuttler missed her smash and her coach P Gopichand fumed. Rare sight.


PV Sindhu 11 - 6 Carolina Marin: Marin won the next point, an error from Sindhu at the net. Sindhu produced a straight smash to win the serve back.

It was followed by another point, this time thanks to Marin's long smash on the right. BREAK.


PV Sindhu 9 - 5 Carolina Marin: Superb full-body dive retrieval from Sindhu, and at the net, from the following play, Marin failed in the net again.

She gained the lead for the first time in the game.


PV Sindhu 1 - 3 Carolina Marin: Just witnessed Sindhu retrieving unplayable rallies, but lost the point. Marin extended the lead with a smash.


PV Sindhu 1 - 1 Carolina Marin: Sindhu started the second game with a point, off her serve. Service over.


Marin required medical attention, with doctor attending to her sprained leg.

PV Sindhu 21- 17 Carolina Marin: But it was it. Sindhu won the first game.


PV Sindhu 20- 17 Carolina Marin: Marin saved two game points, first with a smash and the second, thanks to Sindhu's crash into the net. Another one for Marin, as she played body-shot to perfection.


PV Sindhu 20- 14 Carolina Marin: Sindhu followed it up with yet another cross-court smash. Marin won the next point with a cross-court clear, which caught Sindhu off guard.

But an error from the Spaniard gave Sindhu 6 game points.


PV Sindhu 18 - 13 Carolina Marin: One good rally involving couple of cross-court shots from either player, and it ended with luck favouring Sindhu. Marin's net play failed to cross. Sindhu then killed another long rally with a killer smash on Marin's backhand.


PV Sindhu 16 - 13 Carolina Marin: Another long return and from Marin, but the Spaniard won the next point with a perfectly executed drop shot.


PV Sindhu 15 - 12 Carolina Marin: Marin once again failed to keep in play Sindhu's dribble, sending the shuttle into the net. Sindhu took the lead with a lucky tumble. The Indian then produced a great block on the backhand, which hurried into Marin. 14-12 to the Indian girl. She made it 15-12, thanks to an unforced error from her opponent.


PV Sindhu 11 - 11 Carolina Marin: Sindhu took the all-important lead just before taking the break. After the break, Marin restored the parity thanks to a yet another long return from Sindhu.


PV Sindhu 10 - 10 Carolina Marin: Another long return from Sindhu, which was followed by a killer smash from Marin. Two points lead to Marin. It was followed by a long rally, won by Sindhu. Then the Indian shuttler levelled the score with a smash on Marin's body.


PV Sindhu 8 - 8 Carolina Marin: Sindhu won her fourth straight point with a half-smash, which Marin failed to keep in play. Sindhu took the lead with an unforced error from Marin. But the Spaniard won the next point to keep it 8-8.


PV Sindhu 6 - 7 Carolina Marin: A half-smash and brilliantly placed shot for two points, and Sindhu reduced the gap to two. Another mistake from Marin. 6-7.


PV Sindhu 3 - 7 Carolina Marin: For the first time in the match, Sindhu conceded her lead with a long return, which Marin read well and let go. Sindhu then lost the next three points.


PV Sindhu 3 - 2 Carolina Marin: Marin responded well, winning two back-to-back points, but after a long rally, she sent her return long.


PV Sindhu 2 - 0 Carolina Marin: The Olympic champion started the proceedings with serve, but it was Sindhu who won the first point. Marin challenged the next point and Sindhu got 2-0 love lead, with her placement landing on the line.


19:20 OM IST: Match just about to start, and head-to-head Sindhu trails by 2-5. Their last meeting was at the Rio Olympics final, which Marin won 19-21 21-12 21-15.


19:00 PM IST: Earlier in today, Chinese girl Sun Yu have made the group permutation and combinations lot easier. She defeated Akane Yamaguchi, to keep Sindhu's hopes alive. Had Yamaguchi won the match, whatever the scoreline, it would have meant curtails for Sindhu.

Now a win will give Sindhu second spot behind Sun Yu. But, if she loses, Yamaguchi will go through has the Japanese girl has better win:loss ratio at 4:5.

If Sindhu loses in straight games, her ratio will be 2:5, which is minus 3. In case of a three-game defeat, she will have 3:5, which is still inferior to Yamaguchi's 4:5.


18:40 PM IST: Their match will be after the mixed doubles match between Joachim Fischer Nielsen/Christinna Dedersen of Denamrk and Praveen Jordan/Debby Susanto of Indonesia. The match just started, and is expected to take at least 34 minutes, considering how their recent match-ups fared.


18:30 PM IST: Indian ace Sindhu's must-win match again World and Olympic champion Spaniard Carolina Marin will be the last action of third day at season ending tournament in Dubai. A win a bare minimum for Sindhu as the Group B qualification drama gets tastier in the women's singles' event.


New Delhi: In probably the biggest sporting event involving an Indian sportsperson in 2016, PV Sindhu locked horns with Spain's Carolina Marin in the women's singles final of Rio Olympics 2016. The two are all set to locks horns again, this time in Dubai Super Series Finals.

Sindhu, who lost her second match of the tournament on Wednesday, will take on the Spaniard in a do-or-die match. After getting to a winning start in the tournament, the Hyderabadi shuttler suffered a straight games defeat in her second Group B match. Sindhu, 21, went down to Sun Yu of China 15-21 17-21 in just 49 minutes on the second day of the prestigious year-ending tournament.

But Sindhu would want to avenge for the loss of her defeat against Marin the final of the biggest sporting extravaganza.
