Sakshi Malik engagement: All you need know about the would-be husband of 2016 Rio Olympics medallist

New Delhi: Rio Olympics medallist Sakshi Malik on Sunday got engaged to her long-time boyfriend Satyawart Kadian at a simple function at her Rohtak residence.

The 24-year-old Olympian is already a familiar known in India after her Rio exploits, but her would-be husband is still a relatively unknown figure, even though he himself is an established wrestler.

He is the son of famed Arjuna Awardee pehelwan, Satyavan Kadian. The senior Kadian competed in the 1988 Summer Olympics.

Kadian trains at father's akhada in Rohtak, and won a bronze medal at the 2010 Youth Olympics. He competed in 100kg freestyle category at the Singapore event.

But his big break came in the 2014 Asian Wrestling Championships at Astana, where he won a bronze medal in men's freestyle 97kg event.

The same year, he won a silver medal in the same event at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

The next year, he won the prestigious Rustam-e-International Dangal Wrestling tournament, defeating Ihor Didyk of Belarus.

He is big fan of Indian legends Sushil Kumar and Yogeshwar Dutt.

Junior Kadian is two years younger to Sakshi, and they reportedly fell in love during wrestling tournaments.

The engagement might have come as a surprise to everyone, considering their age and their commitment to wrestling, but Sakshi has never hid the relationship.

Earlier this year, Malik became first woman wrestler from India to win an Olympic medal after she pulled off a sensational 8-5 victory over Aisuluu Tynybekova in the play-off bout.

She also became only the fourth Indian grappler to win a medal in the Olympics. Before her Khashaba Dadasaheb Jadhav, two-time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar and Yogeshwar Dutt had won medals for India.

Malik carried the Indian flag at the closing ceremony of Rio Olympics.
