Erode: In a span of 15 hours, 26 babies were delivered in a day in a local private maternity hospital here.
The babies, comprising 16 boys and ten girls, including seven twins, were delivered on May 23 through caesarian section as the mothers underwent in-vitro fertilisation to conceive, Dr Dhanabagyam Kandasamy, who runs the hospital, said.
Three doctors and more than ten paramedical staff attended to the women from 4 am to 7 pm continuously.
The mothers, including a 50-year-old, and babies are in good condition, she said.
In 2008, the hospital delivered 20 babies in a day, the doctor added. Meanwhile, a member of a Farmers Association claimed that due to water pollution in the Kalingarayan area in the district, many women and men become infertile and so they make a beeline to infertility care centres. PTI
